ADSHE is the Association of Dyslexia Specialists in Higher Education.
The Association evolved from a group which first convened in 2001 to share
common concerns and interests regarding the available support for dyslexic
students in HE. The original group included representatives from approximately
15 HE institutions in the London region, along with several freelance
tutors who were working with dyslexic students.
The group has continued meeting approximately every two months and, as
word spread, increasing numbers of people have expressed interest in the
goals of the group. Meetings to date have addressed various topics, such
as screening, exam arrangements and DSAs, and several invited speakers
contributed to the meetings.
The existing members of ADSHE considered aligning themselves to existing groups of dyslexia specialists (e.g. Patoss), but felt that the concerns of this group were more narrowly focussed on specific issues affecting university students, and therefore it was advisable to concentrate our efforts, rather than affiliate to other groups (it should be noted that several of our members already belong to existing groups.)
As interest has grown, people have suggested setting up regional groups so that all members can have easy access to local meetings. We plan to have an annual conference which will give all members an opportunity to meet and share ideas and concerns.
