Constitution
A. Name:
The name of the Association is Association of Dyslexia Specialists in Higher
Education (ADSHE).
B. Objectives:
The Association’s objectives are:
- To act as a forum for discussion of the professional interests of dyslexia*
specialists in Higher Education and to represent the professional and
related interests of ADSHE members
- To share knowledge and disseminate good practice, including promoting
and developing the understanding of all aspects of dyslexia
- To clarify and promote students’ entitlement to dyslexia support within
individual institutions and throughout the sector
- To promote understanding of disability legislation in relation to students
with dyslexia
- To provide a professional viewpoint to relevant bodies such as the DfES
and HEFCE on matters relating to HE students with dyslexia
*NB: for the purposes of this document, we have used
‘dyslexia’ to encompass other related Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs)
such as dyspraxia and dyscalculia.
C. Powers:
In furtherance of the objectives but not otherwise, the Executive Committee
may exercise the following powers:
- Power to raise funds and to invite and receive contributions provided
that in raising funds the Executive Committee shall not undertake any
substantial permanent trading activities and shall conform to any relevant
requirements of the law
- Power to employ such staff (who shall not be member of the Executive
Committee) as are necessary for the proper pursuit of the objectives and
to make all reasonable and necessary provision for the payment of pensions
and superannuation for staff and their dependants
- Power to co-operate with other charities, voluntary bodies and statutory
authorities operative in furtherance of the objectives or of similar charitable
purposes and to exchange information and advice with them
- Power to establish or support any charitable trusts, associations or
institutions formed for all or any of the objects
- Power to appoint and constitute such advisory committees as the Executive
Committee may think fit
- Power to do all such other lawful things as are necessary for the achievement
of the objectives
D. Membership
- Membership of the Association shall be open to:
a) Institutions of Higher Education, who shall be eligible for institutional
membership for their co-ordinators or their representative
b) Individual dyslexia specialists working with HE students in the UK
- Every member shall have one vote.
- Each member institution shall appoint two individuals to represent it
and to vote on its behalf at meetings of the Association; and may appoint
an alternate to replace its appointed representative at any meeting of
the Association if the appointed representative is unable to attend.
- Each member organisation shall notify the name of the representative
appointed by it and of any alternate to the secretary. If the representative
or alternate resigns from or otherwise leaves the member organisation,
he or she shall forthwith cease to be the representative of the member
organisation.
E. Honorary Officers
At the Annual General Meeting of the Association the members shall elect
from amongst themselves a chairman, a vice-chair, a secretary, a membership
secretary, a treasurer and a deputy treasurer, who shall hold office from
the conclusion of that meeting.
